When preparing for a trip abroad, there are a lot of things to worry about. Will my plane lose my luggage leaving me backpack-less for the entirety of the trip? Will my passport get lost or stolen and leave me stranded in limbo in some foreign country? Will some foreign men abduct me like they do to the girls in the movie Taken (more on that in another blog)? Will a volcano suddenly erupt halting all air travel between Europe and the outside world—umm, really? Well, of course, that is exactly what we had to worry about.
A couple weeks before our scheduled departure, a little volcano named Eyjafjallajokull (no it is not a typo) decided to erupt in Iceland. Despite how awesomely odd it sounds, neither Caitlin nor I fancied seeing our long-planned trip to Europe interrupted/delayed/cancelled by a random exploding volcano in Iceland. Although ashamed to admit it, we felt like Eyjafjallajokull was purposefully ruining our lives. Why us? Why this year in this month? Ahem…obviously the fruition of our trip was more important than the catastrophic effect of this eruption on the European economy, the people of Iceland, and the Earth’s atmosphere.
Ok, so maybe we all get a little too self absorbed sometimes, but I’m still not willing, no matter how cool it sounds, to say that I missed my trip to Europe due to a volcanic eruption in Iceland. Eyjafjallajokull needs to keep its cool, and that goes for its big brother volcano as well! We will take a boat to Europe if we have to!
